Business welcomes Obama's withdrawal of radical union activist from NLRB
Job creators want balance restored to board policies
The business community welcomes President Barack Obama's decision to withdraw his controversial nomination of Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board.
Becker is a former AFL-CIO and SEIU attorney. His placement on the board was a recess appointment made by the president when it was obvious the U.S. Senate would not vote favorably on Becker's confirmation. That appointment expires when Congress adjourns this month.
The PA Chamber, which previously had been out front in the effort to stop harmful federal union card check legislation (ultimately rejected), voiced strong objection to Becker's appointment. Becker' legal writings stated that employers should have little rights during union organizing drives, and he even advocated eliminating the option of "no union" from a voting ballot so that it couldn't be a consideration for employees.
Becker's appointment and NLRB's attempt to pass through regulation the decidedly pro-labor policies it could not achieve through the legislative process have led to increased criticism of NLRB. The agency is supposed to strike a balance between the concerns of employers, unions and employees.
